Although the native language of Catalonia is Catalan, it is co-official with Spanish, in accordance with the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia:

• The characteristic language of Catalonia is Catalan.
• Catalan is the official language of Catalonia, together with Spanish, the official language of the whole Spanish State.
• The Generalitat (Autonomous Government of Catalonia) will ensure the normal and official use of both languages, will take measures necessary to ensure knowledge of them and will create conditions conducive to their full equality in regard to the rights and duties of the citizens of Catalonia.
